Midazolam, (marketed under brand names Versed, Hypnovel and Dormicum) is a drug which is a benzodiazepine derivative. It has powerful anxiolytic, amnestic, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, skeletal muscle relaxant and sedative properties. It is considered a fast-acting benzodiazepine, with a short elimination half-life.
Midazolam is an imidazo-benzodiazepine derivative. It bounds to benzodiazepine receptors in central nervous system and blocks the reflexes via medulla oblongata reticular formation. Its action is sedative, hypnotic, anti-convulsive and muscle-relaxant. From therapeutic point of view it is important that sedative and hypnotic onset of action is rapid and of relatively short duration.
Midazolam absorption from gastrointestinal tract is rapid and bioavailability is over 40% after peroral administration. More than 96% of the absorbed dose is bound to plasma proteins in circulation.
