Bromocriptine is used to treat Parkinson's Disease, menstrual irregularities, and to reduce or prevent breast milk production, except after childbirth (postpartum).

Bromocriptine comes from a group of medicines known as ergot alkaloids. It blocks the release of a hormone called prolactin that affects the menstrual cycle and breast milk production. Bromocriptine is useful in treating menstrual and fertility problems and symptoms caused by cancers (adenomas) that raise prolactin levels in the body. Bromocriptine can be used to treat Parkinson's disease. The drug is also helpful in treating acromegaly (excessive growth hormone). Generic bromocriptine tablets and capsules are available.

Because of its effects as a dopamine agonist, bromocriptine has potential use in treating addiction to cocaine, a drug that exhibits its own effects by blocking dopamine reuptake. Although it has negligible subjective effects when administered alone, studies show it has the potential to significantly ease the cocaine withdrawal syndrome.
