Tramadol is an effective pain reliever (analgesic). Tramadol is an atypical opioid which is a centrally acting analgesic, but it has significantly less potential for abuse and addiction than the narcotics. It is a synthetic agent, unrelated to other opioids, and appears to have actions on the GABAergic, noradrenergic and serotonergic systems. Tramadol is as effective as narcotics in relieving pain but does not depress respiration, a side effect of most narcotics. Tramadol is not a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), and does not have the increased risk of stomach ulceration and internal bleeding that can occur with the use of NSAIDs. It also may be used to treat pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain. In 1998, tramadol became the most used centrally-acting analgesic worldwide; outselling morphine in dollars turned over. The success of tramadol is mainly a result of its favourable side effect profile, which differs significantly from that of other opioids.

Tramadol comes as a tablet to take it orally. It usually is taken every 4-6 hours as needed. It may be taken with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Tramadol exactly as directed. Tramadol can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose take it more often, or for a longer period than your doctor tells you to. Dosages vary depending on the degree of pain experienced by the patient. Tramadol is approximately 10% as potent as morphine, when given by the IV/IM route. Oral doses range from 50?400 mg daily, with up to 600 mg daily when given IV/IM.

The serotonergic modulating properties of tramadol mean that it has the potential to interact with other serotonergic agents. There is an increased risk of serotonin syndrome when tramadol is taken in combination with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (e.g. SSRIs), since these agents not only potentiate the effect of 5-HT but also inhibit tramadol's metabolism.
